Indian Railway manages "Catering and Tourism Corporation Services" (IRCTC) from 2010 onwards. IRCTC aims to enhance passengers experience with Indian Railways by providing various services to passengers. These include Tourism, Food and Catering, Online Ticket Booking through website and SMS via Mobile.

Online Ticket Booking Services provided by IRCTC

before starting Online Ticket Booking also known as E-booking by Indian Railways passengers had to wait for long hours in queue at railway counters. This was very inconvenient for passengers as it look hours of standing in line. To solve this problem Indian Railway started internet based rail ticket booking service.

Booking can be done by visiting railway website www.irctc.co.in as well as through mobile phone app or SMS. Railway also provides facility to book I-tickets which can be booked online and are delivered by post to your address. Passengers can also open their annual account by paying an upfront annual fee. This scheme is called as Rolling Deposit Scheme (RDS) Passengers with annual RDS account can also avail traveling discounts. Through this facility user can book e-ticket from the advance money in their account.

Booking Information

for booking tickets visit Indian railway website. Booking of tickets starts from 10 am onwards. Booking timing varies during festive session. IRCTC is trying whole heatedly to increase its traffic handling capacity. Steps for Online Booking of E-tickets

by following the simple detailed steps you can easily book E-tickets. Follow the simple steps given below one by one.

  • Go to www.irctc.co.in
  • Sign up for your account.
  • Update your profile with valid address, email id and mobile number.
  • Log in by entering your User name and Password.
  • "Plan My Journey" window will appear on left
  • Fill the credentials like Source and Destination Station name, Date. Make sure your From /To station are correct.
  • Select E-ticket option.
  • Select the type of Quota
  • Click on the "Submit" button. This will show all the available trains for the entered route on that date.
  • Click on "Train" to know the route and timing of the selected train.
  • Click on "Class Available" to know fares. Given fare is for single adult person.
  • To book ticket click on “Book Now” button under availability option.
  • For selecting other train click on "Reset" button.
  • After filling the form click on “Next” button and select payment mod and click on “Make Payment” Payment can be done through Credit Card, Credit Card EMI option, Debit Card, Cash Cards.
  • After successful payment you will be shown ticket confirmation details along with a “Print Reservation Slip” button.
  • Hit the "PRS" button to download registration slip.
  • For Booking return ticket click on "Book Return Ticket".
  • For re planning your journey click on "Replan" option.

Cancellation and Refund

for cancelling the ticket you should visit www.irctc.co.in. Note that cancellation is not permitted at the Railway Counters. Select the ticket you want to Cancel and click on “Go For Cancellation” button. Select the passenger whose ticket you want to cancel. Cancellation fee will be deducted from the total fare and remaining amount will be Refunded automatically to your account. Sometimes it may happen that your amount is not refunded in such case Railway doesn’t take any responsibility.

Steps for booking of I-tickets

Procedure for booking I-ticket is same as E-ticket. In case of I-ticket your ticket will be delivered to you at your Postal Address given at the time of registration.

If you are not available for receiving the ticket anyone on your behalf can take the delivery.

I-tickets will cost you little more than E-tickets as it includes Postage charge. Cancellation of i-ticket should be done from the website. Cancellation of i-ticket is on the same ground as e-ticket.
